Een reis in de tijd langs de
schilderingen van Sri Lanka

Al kort vanaf de Christelijke
jaartelling vinden we op Sri Lanka muurschilderingen. Hierbij zijn de
vroegst goed te dateren schilderingen in Sigiriya het belangrijkste
hoogtepunt in de schilderkunst van het eiland. Op een immense rots werden
in de 5de eeuw na Christus defresco’s van de wereldberoemde “Wolkenmeisjes”
aangebracht. Interessant is dat deze schilderingen geen religieuze inhoud
hebben. Pas enkele  eeuwen
later werd in “de vergeten fresco’s van Pulligoda Galge” uit de 8ste eeuw
gekozen voor een sterk religieuze context. Was het boeddhisme sinds de 5de
eeuw voor Christus al een belangrijke inspiratiebron voor kunstenaars in
Sri Lanka, pas vanaf 8ste eeuw werd dit thema ook consequent doorgezet in
de schilderkunst.
In de reliekkamer van de
11de eeuwse Mahiyangana Stupa werden talloze schilderingen aangebracht met
betrekking tot de Boeddha, maar in de stad Polonnaruva kwamen deze thema’s
pas echt tot leven. Hier werd in de 12de eeuw de Tivanaka Pilimage gebouwd,
een zgn. image house. Hierin zijn naast de vereringsscene’s ook diverse
jataka’s afgebeeld die verhalen over de vorige levens van Boeddha.
Na de val van het
koninkrijk van Polonnaruva in de 13de eeuw raakt ook de schilderkunst in
verval. Pas vanaf de 18de eeuw worden door het koninkrijk Kandy weer
opdrachten gegeven om te schilderen. Hoogtepunt hierin zijn de
schilderingen in de grotten van Dambulla, grotten die al gebruikt worden
ver voor de Christelijke jaartelling. Hiermee ontstaat ook een nieuwe
school in de schilderkunst, specifiek voor Kandy. Naast de puur religieuze
afbeeldingen worden vanaf deze periode ook veel historische gebeurtenissen
geschilderd zoals bijvoorbeeld in de tempels van Degaldoruva en
Lankatileke. Tijdens deze voordracht door Peter de Bruijn zal ook kort
worden ingegaan op enkele Hindoeïstische afbeeldingen.

Sri Lanka / Ceylon photographs from the Life
Photo Archive
Search
engine Google announced the availability of never-before-seen images from
the LIFE photo archive. This effort to bring offline images online was
inspired by the mission to organize all the world's information and make
it universally accessible and useful. This collection of newly-digitized
images includes photos and etchings produced and owned by LIFE dating all
the way back to the 1750s.
Only a very small percentage of these images have ever been published. The
rest have been sitting in dusty archives in the form of negatives,
slides, glass plates, etchings, and prints. Google is digitizing them so
that everyone can easily experience these fascinating moments in time.
Today about 20 percent of the collection is online; during the next few
months, Google will be adding the entire LIFE archive — about 10 million

 If every
picture tells a story, then every photograph gives an elegant and
accurate description of that story.
The institution of photography in Ceylon was first
established in the mid 1840's and was practiced quite extensively towards
the end of the 19th Century. During that period there were dozens of
local and foreign artist who took up the challenge to record the daily
events which took place in the beautiful and mysterious island of Ceylon in the form
of a photographic image.
Starting with the first recorded photographer,
S.J. Barrow, who experimented with this new invention in the mid 1840's,
the title of novice and professional photographer in Ceylon was held by
many distinguished individuals such as Frederick Fiebig (1840-1852),
William Andre (1860-1870), Samuel Bourne & Shepherd (1863-1872),
Julia Margaret Cameron (1875-1879), Henry William Cave (1880-1900),
Adolphus Grigson (1870-1880), Joseph Lawton (1866-1872), AWA Plate
(1892-1930), Charles T. Scowen (1873-1893) and William Louis Henry Skeen
(1860-1903).
This site is dedicated to the many brave
individuals, who traveled far away from their own safe homes, on many
occasions venturing deep into an unexplored land with little regard to
their own safety, in order to capture that perfect moment in time on to a
photograph.
