Bruijn, Peter de, Kāraikkālammaiyār; Part 1: An iconographical and textual study; Part 2: Poems for Siva
An iconographical and textual study on the most famous Tamil
female poet Kāraikkālammaiyār, one of the 63
nāyanmār or Śaiva saints. This work is based on
research done in India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia during 1994-2006. In the book the
idea of the poet Kāraikkālammaiyār being depicted in
Indian and Southeast Asian art is discussed. As a textual source for this
research the complete work of the poet translated in English is included,
the first publication in English.
This work is interesting for scholars and specialists of South
Indian art and is the first complete publication of this saint in
English. It describes the dwelling place of Śiva Naţarāja.,
the forest at Tiruvalangadu in South India where
Śiva performed his famous dance. As mythology tells us, Kāraikkālammaiyār formerly known as the beautiful Punitavati, literally gave up
her life in this world to worship Siva and to accompany him in his dance
on the cremationfields in Tiruvalangadu. Also click here

Bruijn, Peter de, Poems for Śiva, Illustrated with masterpieces of Hindu art
Poems for
Śiva contains the complete work of the female Śaiva
saint and poet Kāraikkālammaiyār. The South Indian poet
Kāraikkālammaiyār is probably to be dated to the 7th
century and she is one of the 63 nāyanmār or Śaiva
saints. In this book the complete work ascribed to
Kāraikkālammaiyār is translated for the
first time in English. Some famous depictions in art of the poet come
from Sri Lanka.
A very detailed description is given of one of the most famous
depictions in Indian art, namely the dancing Śiva
Naţarāja. Besides this, Kāraikkālammaiyār wrote
some very detailed verses on her own appearance and many other gods,
minor deities and Hindu myths. These descriptions are illustrated with
many (colour) plates. For this a selection of some Hindu masterpieces is
made from India, Sri Lanka and Southeast
Asia
This work is interesting for scholars and specialists of South
Indian art and culture but also is an excellent work to those interested
in Hindu culture and the expression of devotion to the hindu god
Śiva. Because of the focus of the poet on the dancing Śiva,
many aspects of this books are related to
current classical Indian dances as Bharat Nātyam.

Roscam Abbing,

Dutch and British colonial
intervention in Sri Lanka, 1780 - 1815
Expansion and Reform, TANAP Monographs on the
History of Asian-European Interaction, 7. 2007. 300 pp.
The study examines
the colonial intervention in Sri Lanka at the end of the eighteenth
century, when British rule replaced Dutch rule on the island. It focuses
on the local reforms in the Dutch administration and policymaking on the
island prior to the take-over and the various ways in which the British
colonial government dealt with the Dutch legacy. Native agency in the
colonial state formation process, the influence of the revolutions that
swayed Europe at the time and changes in
Dutch and British colonial exploitation are addressed respectively in an
effort to characterize the transition of colonial regimes in Asia during this revolutionary
era. To order click

de Silva, R.K. and Beumer, W.G.M.
Illustrations and Views of Dutch Ceylon 1602-1796: A
Comprehensive Work of Pictorial Reference with Selected Eye-witness
Accounts. London: Serendib Publications, 1988,
495
pages, ISBN : 0-9510710-1-7
The book is primarily a pictorial reference, complemented by
extensive excerpts from original texts and well researched notes. The
illustrations are from contemporary publications by such historians as
Baldaeus and Valentijn, while the paintings and drawings are by varied
artists and VOC draughtsmen. Besides an abundance of topographical
sketches there are pictures depicting the flora and fauna, customs,
occupations, dress, and portraits of Dutch officials. The 17th and 18th
century books from which extracts have been selected are available to but
a few. Some 150 paintings and drawings are reproduced here in colour for
the first time alongside about 250 illustrations in black and white; many
of them, besides being valuable as historical evidence, are a high artistic
merit. This work offers ready access to a rich range of pictures and a
wealth material, which will not only serve future scholars in their
research, but will give pleasure to those many people who are eager to
learn more of the shared past of Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. To order click here
